Soccer this week

All of our new teams kicked off their first games of the Winter II season this week.
  • The Sunday Orange Crush co-ed team won our first game 2-1.
  • The Monday Orange Crush co-ed team tied our first game 1-1.
  • Our Tuesday associated men's team The Matrix won our first game 9-5.
We will be having our Wednesday night pick up game this week, January 9th, at 8:30 PM at Corner Kick Indoor Soccer in Maplewood. Players should bring a white t-shirt, a black t-shirt, and also an orange t-shirt so that we can split into three visually distinct teams. We will ask each player to kick in $10 this week to cover the cost of the field.

Because we have been coming up short paying for the fields the last few weeks, starting January 16 we will be asking each player to kick in $12 towards the cost of the field instead of the ten we had been asking for.

Indoor Soccer in December

During December we will play pick up games on Wednesdays from 8:30 - 10:30 PM at Corner Kick Indoor Soccer in Maplewood. As always, each player will kick in $10 towards the cost of the field. Players should bring a white t-shirt, a black t-shirt, and also an orange t-shirt so that we can split into three visually distinct teams. New players are always welcome to join us. We will play pick up games on December 5, 12, 19, and 26.

Last week Sophie, a photographer from Lavender Magazine, photographed us during our pick up game. We also submitted a press release (below) to them in the hopes that more people will find out about us and want to get involved.

Several players signed up for league play, and as it stands now, our co-ed team Orange Crush will have teams playing on Sunday and Monday. Our affiliate men's team The Matrix will play on Tuesdays. We have room for more players on these teams, especially for female players. To see the current rosters, see this link: teams.pdf Players should get fees to JB or Andrew ASAP. Email mnglbtsoccer@gmail.com if you would still like to get on a team roster. These teams will begin play in January

Pick up game attendance for the last three weeks has been 19, 21, and 18 players. Players reacted very favorably to our pick up game lasting for two hours instead of sharing the field for only a single hour. New players have joined us each of the last three weeks, this is a a trend that we want to continue.

Practices During August and September

Please note the time change for Mondays and Wednesdays. Since it is getting darker earlier, we will practice Mondays and Wednesday evenings at 6:30 PM at Texa-Tonk Park in St. Louis Park. It is a quarter field with goals and nets.

We hold practices on Mondays and Wednesdays for most of the year, and we also have Saturday practices for the next month. Saturday practices will be at 1:00 PM at Bryn Mawr Meadows in Minneapolis.

Practices are free. You can come once a week or every practice as your time permits.

We are fielding a 7x7 co-ed team, Orange Crush, for a league that starts the last week in September and we are looking for players (especially female players) that are interested in playing with us in that league. Orange Crush will play on Sundays We may field one or more additional teams (probably a men's 6x6 or 8x8 team) depending on interest levels.

As a little history, we started playing and organizing as a group in January of this year, since to our knowledge there was no openly gay or explicitly GLBT friendly soccer organization in the Twin Cities. We fielded two teams during the summer. One team, the Pineapples, played in a co-ed 7x7 league and another team, the Flamingos, played in a men's 6x6 league.

Soccer on Saturday

Several players decided that they would like to play on Saturday this week in addition to Monday and Wednesday nights. Since league play does not begin until mid-September, having a Saturday practice will be fun and still give us a time to meet on the weekend. From now through September 15, we will be meeting on Saturdays at 1:00 PM at Bryn Mawr Meadows in Minneapolis. There are three soccer fields at Bryn Mawr Meadows. We plan to use the soccer fields closest to the parking lot.

New players are welcome to join us, and we hope that returning players take advantage of the additional practice time. As always, shin guards and soccer cleats are recommended but not required. Please bring a dark shirt and a white shirt so that if we scrimmage we can create visually distinct teams.

Planning Our Next Steps as a Group

As many of you know, in addition to our Monday and Wednesday night practices/scrimmages, we put together two teams that played in two different leagues this summer. Our Co-ed team the Pineapples played on Saturday afternoons and our men's team the Flamingos played on Tuesday evenings.

The Flamingos tied our final game.Flamingos players that played in our last game are pictured above.

We invite everyone who has played with us ever, or who wishes to play with us in the future to come to a meeting regarding the near future of our group. This meeting will be taking place on Saturday, August 11 at 3:00 PM at Camp Bar which is located at 490 N Robert Street in downtown St. Paul.

We welcome players of all genders and sexual orientations to play with us.

Please bring any information about the leagues that you would be interested in joining. This discussion can be narrowly focused, looking at specific things like "What leagues should we participate in for the late summer and/or fall,?" but discussion can also take place on a wider scope regarding longer term goals that we may have for our organization. The only thing that has been decided so far is that our next team to be created will be sponsored by Camp Bar and will be called Orange Crush. Do you have thoughts about fund raisers, improving team play, traveling to an international GLBT Soccer tournament, recruiting new players or any other topic related to the group? Come make your thoughts known.

If you are not able to make it to the meeting, please feel free to write down your thoughts and email them to mnglbtsoccer@gmail.com and we will see to it that your email is read to the assembled group.

After the meeting stick around and socialize with your fellow players, we are fun on and off the field.

Pineapples vs Pagliacci - FINAL GAME

On Saturday, August 4, 2007 at 12:30 PM, our co-ed team, the Pineapples will gather at Holy Angels School, (South Field) to take on Pagliacci. This will be the Pineapples final game in this league. We would really enjoy seeing as many players as possible for our send off, so even if you have not been able to make it to the games for several weeks, we hope you will be able to play with us this week.

After the game, we will be coordinating a visit to Camp for celebratory drinks.

Monday Night GLBT Soccer

New players are welcome to join us.

We will be practicing and scrimmaging as Monday Night GLBT Soccer continues. We will start at 7:00 PM on Monday July 9th. The soccer field is located at Texa-Tonka Park, 2750 Virginia Ave S. in St. Louis Park. There is a parking lot at Victoria Lake on 28th and Virginia. Click the link above for a Google map to that location.

The field is short, but is in really nice condition. It has lines and goals and nets. When we arrived last week there were kids practicing on it. We warmed up and ran drills for about 1/2 hour off the field until the kids and their parents left. Then we took the field and played to our hearts content.

Pineapples vs Pagliacci

On Saturday, June 30, 2007 at 12:30 PM, our co-ed team, the Pineapples will gather at Holy Angels School, (South Field) to take on a team called Pagliacci. Our game starts at 1:00 PM in the City Sports Connection co-ed 7v7 12 match league. Players should bring an orange shirt, a white shirt, soccer cleats and shin guards. Bottled water comes in handy too, as it gets hot on the field and staying hydrated is very important.

Our opponents this week, Pagliacci, have 2 wins and 4 losses. If we focus and play hard we may earn our first win of the season.

We strongly encourage new players to join us.

Wednesday Night GLBT Soccer

We will be meeting on Wednesday, June 27 at Bossen Park at 6:30 PM. Bossen Park is located at 5657 28th Ave. S in Minneapolis. Click here for a map to Bossen Park.

We are required to pay a field rental fee for the use of this field, so we ask all Wednesday Night GLBT Soccer participants to kick in $5 each week to cover the cost. This is a full size field with soccer goals and nets.

We will practice some drills, and then separate into two teams for a friendly scrimmage. Bringing both a light and dark shirt would be ideal.

We are looking for additional players to join us.

Week 12 - Preparing for What Comes Next

First off, we will be playing again this evening, Monday, April 9, 2007 from 8:30 - 9:30 PM at Corner Kick Indoor Soccer. If you plan to join us for the first time, if you would like more information, or if you are interested in carpooling email mnglbtsoccer@gmail.com . Please do not wear spikes if at all possible.

That out of the way, we had a great time at the 19 Bar on Friday night. We met some new persons interested in playing with us and talked a bit about the potential for league play in the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Soccer League. With our current level of participation, I propose that we form a 6x6 Co-ed team and a 6x6 Men's team. We will talk about this and other possibilities after we play this evening. This conversation will no doubt continue in the future. Registration for the park league started last week, however and I know the league fills up, so if we are interested in doing this we need to act fast. Participation in a league team is not required for you to continuing to participate in our Minnesota GLBT Monday night soccer group.

Also in discussion is where we will play on Monday nights once we move outdoors. Andrew and Jesse went on a tour of several fields, and Andrew reports:
Jesse and I just went and walked to the fields by the Quarry. We found 6 sets of soccer posts that they were about to put out. The fields seemed like they were in good conditions. That would be my recommendation. It's centrally located so most people can get here pretty easily.
I have also been looking at the locations of other fields on the satellite version of Google Maps to try to find nice looking fields.

Week 10 - Oh What a Game!

We had twelve players show up on Monday and two of those players were brand new to our group. We had three balls on the field during warm ups, so it was a bit like the bonus round on a pinball table with extra balls flying everywhere.

We split into two teams, headed by Jesse and Adam and began playing. The quality of our play is very clearly improving. We played with four on the field and two substitues for each side. The substitutes were well used for the most part. It seemed like everyone really put their heart into the game. I don't think I have seen queers sweat that much off the dance floor since... ever. Our passing game is improving and this goes far in terms of putting together an organized and effective offense. We did not keep track of the scoore, but both teams scored many many times.

At one point we had to stop the game due to one of our balls being logded in the netting above the field, but the short and somewhat silly break in the game gave several of us the chance to catch our collective breath before returning to the game.

The temperature outside was a balmy 80 degrees Farenheit, so the tempreature in the building we play in was probably warmer than it has ever been during oe of our sessions.

When the game was over we talked a bit more about moving to an outdoor venue. Anthony suggested a field in Bryn Mawr, someone suggested fields near the U of M, St. Paul campus, and I suggested that we all pay attention to the soccer fields that we pass outside to find the best places to play.

We will be playing at Corner Kick for at least the next 2 weeks, but eventually we will move to the great outdoors. I am going to try to bring a small scoreboard for nextweek's 8:30 PM game so we can keep track of our goals.

Week 9 - A Great Success

Andrew sent out a reminder on March 17th about the game, and I hoped that we would have at least seven players. The turn out made me smile. Eleven players showed up to Corner Kick!

We started out kicking the ball around the field and warming up. I asked two of our best players to be opposing captains, and we split our players up according to shirt colors. One team started play with six players while the other team had five, but at any given time there were only four players on the field for each side, a goalie and three players. Having substitution players is great because it lets you run very hard and then take much needed breaks. The teams were relatively evenly matched and everyone played hard.

At the end of the game everyone seemed really upbeat, and our hearts were beating fast due to our exertion on the field. We had a short chat about implementing an additional rule for next week (the goalie can only kick or throw the ball to a player that has not crossed the middle line) and everyone pitched in $10 (or $5) to cover the cost of the field rental. I mentioned that we will be at Corner Kick for at least the next 3 weeks, but that at some point we will want to have a discussion about when to move outside, and where we should play once we do move outside.

We talked about the possibility of getting together on Friday night to check out the new nightclub Pi (or is it Pie?) in South Minneapolis. Then we dispersed and went home.

I stopped in the soccer store in the facility and purchased a couple of good quality soccer balls, so next week we will have a couple of new balls to kick around.
