Wednesday Night GLBT Soccer - Our last time at Northeast Park

Wednesday evening we will gather at 6:15 PM at Northeast Park in Minneapolis. Justin has volunteered to lead us in drills this week. After drills we will separate into teams to scrimmage. Players should bring both a black and white t-shirt. Cleats and shin guards are recommended but not required.

New players of all skill levels are welcome to join us.

This will be the last time that we will meet at Northeast Park, as the fields are reserved from June 4. More information will be forthcoming regarding the location(s) that we will use on Monday and Wednesday evenings in the future.

Our potluck social on Monday evening went well. Thanks to everyone that contributed to the great spread of food.

Monday Night GLBT Soccer - Now with Potluck!

We will be meeting at 6:15 PM at Northeast Park in Minneapolis on Monday May 28, 2007. After warming up for a few minutes, one of our players will lead us in a few soccer drills. We will then split into two teams and play a scrimmage. Players should bring both a dark and white t-shirt so that we can be flexible when we separate into teams. Cleats and shin guards are recommended but not required.

After we finish playing, probably around 8:45 PM or so, we will head over to one of our players homes located about three blocks from the park, for socializing and a late potluck supper. If possible please bring some food or beverage to share. Since many of us have the day off on Monday for Memorial Day, hopefully players will spend their entire day cooking wonderful dishes and will wow us with their culinary skills. (OK, I know am dreaming.) Our team contains more than one vegetarian, but plenty of meat eaters play soccer with us too.

Spread the Word: We Want More Women to Play Soccer!

We want more women to play on our soccer team! Some really awesome women play for us right now, but we'd like to see our female participation level match or surpass our male participation level.

In particular, MNGLBTSoccer is looking for women who can play on our co-ed team, the Pineapples. The Pineapples play on Saturdays, usually at 1:00 PM. Lesbian, bisexual, and queer-friendly straight women are welcome to play on our team.

Please spread the word! Here's some ways that you can help: copy this message and send it to all your email contacts, ask a friend personally who might be interested, post this message and forward it where potential members might see it (listservs, websites, etc).

Monday and Wednesday Night Soccer

On Monday and Wednesday evenings we get together to build our skills and have fun. We gather at 6:15 PM at Northeast Park in Minneapolis. We warm up for a few minutes, then a rotating player leads us in drills which focus on improving our level of play on the field. When our drills are completed we separate into two teams and play against each other in a scrimmage. Players should bring both a black and white t-shirt so that we can be flexible when we separate into teams. Cleats and shin guards are recommended but not required.

New players of all skill levels are welcome to join us.

We also field two teams that play in recreational leagues in the Twin Cities, the Pineapples and the Flamingos.

Pineapples Fall to 0 and 2 after Game Two

Although the Pineapples had a stronger showing than last week, and we did manage to successfully score a goal, we lost today to FC Firemonkeys. Ray scored our first goal of the season for us, so kudos to him

Our roster was a bit lopsided; eleven male players and two of our regular female players were able to attend. We were able to draft one of our female spectators which kept us from having to play short on the field. All of our female players had to play the full game, and they did an excellent job despite having to play the entire game in the heat. Recruiting additional female players is probably our best course of action to ensure that our female players will be able to sub out in future games.

Unfortunately, one of our players, Rhett, was injured during the game and was taken to have his wrist x-rayed. No word yet regarding if the bone his arm was sprained, broken or just bruised.

Pineapples vs FC Fire monkeys

On Saterday May 19, at 12:30 PM the Pineapples will gather at Augsburg AirDome, WEST Field to take on FC Fire Monkeys. Our game starts at 1:00 PM in the City Sports Connection co-ed 7v7 12 match league.

Also a note about yesterday's Wednesday Night GLBT Soccer for those of you that missed it. Fourteen players graced the field although some arrived late or had to leave the field early. We began with some group practice, and Justin demonstrated the fundamentals of kicking the ball with different parts of your foot and trapping the ball. Justin's drills included passing and trapping, dribbling down the field, and dribbling around cones then passing. It is amazing how going back to basic fundamentals can improve your play.

Incorporating Drills into Monday and Wednesday Night GLBT Soccer

For the first time since we began playing as a group, back in January yesterday we practiced drills before scrimmaging. Skill building drills will become a standard part of our Monday and Wednesday nights, so that we build our ball handling, passing and shooting skills systematically. On Monday evening Andrew led nineteen players in a drill passing the ball up the field with one touch per pass. Then we worked on throw-in techniques. Ideally, each practice one player will step up to lead drills before we split into two teams to play a friendly game.

As usual, we will meet on Wednesday night this week at 6:15 PM at Northeast Park. Whether you are a regular player or a first timer, you are welcome join our soccer group and play with us.

Pineapples 0 and 1 after Game One

Although the Pineapples lost our first game, we had a great time on Saturday afternoon. Special kudos to Yur Vang who played the whole game without a single substitution.

We played well, but our opponents played better. This loss gave us perspective regarding skills we need to work on. We will be incorporating drills and skill building exercises in our Monday and Wednesday Night GLBT Soccer groups.

Playing in rain and fog, league details, and sponsorship information

Last night we played soccer in the rain again. The first part of our scrimmage was played in a downpour. The temperature was warm enough that even though we were soaked, it was not cold. Later in the game, there was a deep dense fog that cause the field to feel spooky, like a graveyard in an episode of Scooby Doo. We had twenty players and we laughed a lot due to the slippery conditions on the field. We will meet again tomorrow evening at 6:15 PM at Northeast Park for Wednesday Night GLBT Soccer, and hopefully the field will be dry.

The Pineapples, our team in the City Sports Connection 7x7 co-ed league begin play at 1:00 PM this Saturday, May 12 at Holy Angels School located at 6600 Nicollet Ave S (just S of 35W/Hwy 62). Please try to arrive at the field between 12:15 and 12:30 so that we can warm up and set our strategy for the game. Team members are required to bring both an orange and a white shirt. We will try to have our official orange uniform shirts by the second week. Our roster is still open and if you have not signed up yet, but would like to play on Saturday please email mnglbtsoccer@gmail.com and let us know that we can count on you to be there.

The Flamingos, our team in the Minneapolis Park and Recreation 6x6 men's league will begin play at 6:00 or 7:00 PM at Neiman Fields G west or east on Tuesday June 5. Our roster for this team also remains open. (Surprisingly, at this time there are only four teams in this league.)

After last nights game, members of the team spoke about how much we would enjoy having our teams sponsored by a GLBT friendly business. Ben organized several of our players to contact potential sponsors this week. Below is some information that will be useful when talking to businesses about sponsoring our teams. To reward our sponsor(s) we would patronize their business and talk about their generous sponsorship of our team to our our friends, families, and larger GLBT community.

The Pineapples' participation in the City Sports Connection 7x7 co-ed 12-week league costs $949. The cost for our uniform shirts will be an additional $25 -$35 per player. At this time we have 13 players on the roster, but this # is likely to increase to at least 15 players. This means if a business would generously offer a full sponsorship of the entire team, this would cost (35 x 15)+ 949 for a total of $1474. Partial sponsorships of lesser amounts would also be acceptable, perhaps one business might sponsor our league fees and another would be willing to sponsor our uniforms.

The Flamingos' participation in the Minneapolis Park and Recreation men's 8-week league costs $495. The cost for our uniform shirts will be an additional $25 -$35 per player. At this time we have 14 players on the roster, but this # is likely to increase to at least 15 players. This means if a business would generously offer a full sponsorship of the entire team, this would cost (35 x 15)+ 495 for a total of $1020. Partial sponsorships of lesser amounts would also be acceptable, perhaps one business might sponsor our league fees and another would be willing to sponsor our uniforms.

The cost of uniforms for 15 players on each team using the formula above is $525. Andrew and Katie agreed to communicate about finding the best deals on uniforms.

Thanks in advance to the players making contact with potential sponsors, and an even bigger thanks to businesses considering sponsoring us, MNGLBTSOCCER, the only GLBT soccer group in the Twin Cities.

Summer League Play

We will continue to play scrimmages on Monday and Wednesday nights at 6:15 PM at Northeast Park in Minneapolis.

Those who choose to can also play with our teams in league play. At this time we have registered two teams for league play.

Our men's 6x6 team, Flamingos, is registered in the Minneapolis Park and Recreation League. The Flamingos will play Tuesday Nights at the Neiman Athletic Complex, starting Tuesday, June 5th. This 6x6 league is targeted toward men, but women are also allowed to play on the team.

Our co-ed 7x7 team, Pineapples, is registered in the Cities Sports Connection League. The Pineapples will play Saturdays between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM at a variety of outdoor "Astroplay" fields, starting Saturday, May 12. This 7x7 league requires three men and three women on the field at all times and the goalie may be of either gender.

We will have league sign-up sheets at tonight's 6:15 PM Wednesday Night MN GLBT Soccer and both Monday and Wednesday night soccer next week as well. We will also talk about potential sponsorships and the financial costs associated with league play.
